Abutments are available in a variety of materials, namely titanium, cobalt-chromium (Cr-Co), zirconia and gold. Traditionally used abutments made of Cr-Co and titanium are very stable. However, they compromise esthetics by revealing a gray shadow through the mucosa around an implant, which affects the final restoration. For this reason, manufacturers have introduced hybrid abutments that combine the strength of titanium at the connection and the aesthetic optical properties of zirconia at the coronal portion. These abutments consist of a titanium base plate connected to a zirconia framework that has been homothetically machined to the future restoration. This type of abutment is particularly suitable for screw-retained prostheses.
