The implant prosthesis must be attached to the underlying superstructure (implant abutment), which is the link between the implant and the crown. There are two ways to attach the crown to the implant abutment: Screw fixation or cementation. In a cemented prosthesis, the crown is attached with cement, which fixes it to the abutment. Cemented restorations may be indicated in the anterior region if the screw access hole is in the esthetic zone. Cemented restorations may be appropriate in the posterior region if the patient has a limited mouth opening or a very large prosthetic height. The practitioner chooses the type of cement according to the clinical situation, but temporary cements are preferred because of their biocompatibility in case excess cement is expelled around the implant neck.
