The supra-implant crown must be firmly attached to the underlying superstructure (implant abutment), which acts as an intermediary between the implant and the crown. There are two ways to attach the crown to the implant abutment: Screw fixation or cementation. In a screw-retained prosthesis, the crown is secured with a single screw that connects the crown/abutment complex directly to the implant. Screw-retained restorations may be indicated when the implant is placed in an ideal axis where the screw access hole is located on the occlusal surface or in the palatal position for anterior teeth. A low prosthetic height may also indicate the use of a screw-retained prosthesis.
